I am representing the NARFE, Nation Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees, and have just attended the convention of the New Mexico State Federation of Chapters in Albuquerque. The mission of NARFE is to support the active and retired federal employees in maintaining their benefits though lobbying the Legislature.
In 1985, NARFE took on the goal of supporting research to aid in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. A new report by the Alzheimer's Association finds that one in three seniors dies with Alzheimer's or another dementia in the United States. Nationally, NARFE has raised $10 million from members over the years and donated it to Alzheimer's research. The goal for 2013 is another $1 million. At the end of March, New Mexico NARFE members have contributed $7,500 for the year. The total costs for long-term care from government, insurance and other sources is expected to be $203 billion for 2013. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the only one without a way to prevent, cure or slow its progression. Other leading causes of death continue to decline while Alzheimer's has increased by 68 percent from 2000-20I0. There are no survivors! If you have Alzheimer's, you either die from it or with it, as did my father and brother. I write this to urge our members and others to support Alzheimer's research and also to recognize the valuable contributions public service personnel make and have made for the nation's welfare on this May 5 to May 11 Public Recognition Week.
