The Alzheimer's Association New Mexico Chapter will present a Support Group Day Class - Final Stage Care- from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday at the Deming Senior Center, 800 S. Granite St. in Deming. This class is meant to give you practical skills in dealing with Alzheimer's Disease and related Dementias.

Life with Alzheimer's is hard and this class will help make it easier. Caregivers the world over face the same problems, the same need for assistance and the same desire to care for their family member as long as possible. That the experiences and feelings ring true in so many diverse cultures is another indication of the universal tragedy of the Dementias.

The brain is made up of nerve cells and neurons with branches. Signals traveling through the neuron forest form the basis of memories, thoughts and feelings. Neurons are the chief type of cell destroyed by Alzheimer's disease.

Abnormal clusters of protein fragments, build up between nerve cells called plaques. Dead and dying nerve cells contain "tangles" which are made up of twisted strands of another protein. Plaques and tangles tend to spread through the cortex in a predictable pattern as Alzheimer's disease progresses.

The problems of behavior and the ill person's needs for care are similar whether the caregiver is a family member, a day care or home care provider or nursing home staff member. Both Men and Women suffer from these diseases.

This class will help improve daily life, explain the disease

characteristics and progressions. It will give you the best ways to deal with behaviors and communication and provide information on who you can turn to for help respite and other assistance.
