The anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List is targeting Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe in new radio ad out today — the first paid advertising so far on behalf of either candidate.

SBA List goes after McAuliffe for opposing the Virginia Board of Health’s new regulations for abortion clinics—measures McAuliffe called an “unnecessary move” on the part of the state, according to a New York Times story. Pro-abortion rights activists have spoken out against the new guidelines as a burdensome and unnecessary expense for the state’s abortion clinics.

“In the race for Governor…there’s one candidate who has taken extreme positions far outside the mainstream….one candidate whose radical ideas are troubling to every woman in Virginia. It’s Terry McAuliffe,” the ad says. “Just this month Terry McAuliffe opposed basic health and safety standards for some women’s health clinics that perform abortions. McAuliffe refuses to require women’s health clinics to provide the same sanitary environment we expect of dental offices and hospitals.”

The $50,000 radio buy will air the next two weeks in the northern Virginia, Richmond and Norfolk media markets. It’s a small buy, but a sign of what’s to come in the race: SBA List has pledged to spend $1.5 million on behalf of GOP Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s campaign.

The ad is paid for by Women Speak Out Virginia PAC, a political arm of SBA List. Cuccinelli attended an SBA List summit earlier this month.

McAuliffe spokesman Josh Schwerin blasted the ad as another example of Cuccinelli’s focus on social and ideological issues.

“Ken Cuccinelli has spent his career on a divisive ideological agenda, so its no surprise he’d make it the centerpiece of his campaign,” Schwerin said. “We should be focusing on growing the economy, not on restricting women’s health care decisions and access.”
