The coldest day in decades turned out all warm and fuzzy for one newly-larger family.
With the D.C. area experiencing near-record low temperatures[1] , a couple's early-morning distress call to a Northern Virginia police department could have been dire. What the responding officer found, though -- when he found the family's SUV parked on a median at an intersection, before the sun was up -- will melt your heart.
Here's how the Fairfax County Police Department put it on their Facebook page[2] :
What a way to start a day: Officer Henderson was first on scene this frigid morning, checking on the welfare of a couple that had frantically called 9-1-1 for help. Imagine his surprise when he saw a woman, wrapped in blankets in the back seat of her SUV, smiling...and when she uncovered the blanket, just slightly, she revealed a newborn baby girl she'd just delivered. He stood by, made sure the vehicle was kept safely parked & warm until rescue arrived.
Police department spokesperson Lucy Caldwell told the Associated Press[3] that "due to a language barrier," the family's situation wasn't immediately clear -- but that once the first officer arrived, "he gave the ‘OK’ sign with his hands to the woman in the back seat. She returned the gesture, smiled and pulled down a blanket to reveal her brand new baby girl, Caldwell said."
Paramedics brought the family to a local hospital. Caldwell told HuffPost by email that the baby girl is 6 lbs. 8 oz, and that her parents "did not want to be identified," but that she "is fine and healthy!"
And, as you can see in the photo that FCPD put up on their Facebook page later in the afternoon, she's awfully cute, too.
