LUMBERTON — Hundreds of people will take a walk to remember Saturday during the 20th annual Alzheimer’s Walk at Luther Britt Park, an event to raise awareness for the debilitating disease and money to fight it.
Alzheimer’s NC will host the 2013 Robeson County Alzheimer’s Walk for Memory at Luther Britt Park on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
Kim Branch, an Alzheimer’s support group facilitator in Lumberton, said the walk is about two miles and participants must fill out a form releasing liability the day of the walk.
Registration is free, but participants are encouraged to raise at least $25. Proceeds from the walk will fund educational services for people with Alzheimer’s disease, their families and caregivers, local support groups and research. Branch said Alzheimer’s NC hopes to raise at least $12,000 this year.
Participants will enjoy live entertainment, refreshments and door prizes, including gift cards and flower arrangements. Dr. Robin Peace, who practices family medicine at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, will give a speech, Branch said. Peace won a Community Health Award for her work to improve the health of county residents at Robeson Community College on Tuesday.
More than 5.2 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s every year, and at least 25,000 die from the disease. Alzheimer’s is the sixth-highest killer disease in the country.
