Plans for the future headquarters of the Alzheimer's Association

The Houston and Southeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is getting a new headquarters that will nearly triple the size of its current space.

The group plans to renovate the 16,300-square-foot building at 6055 S. Loop East near Long Drive previously occupied by Plus4 Credit Union. The budget for the project is $3 million including the building purchase and renovations, the agency said.

Architectural firm Gensler is designing the project. The building will be remodeled to create a friendly environment for families affected by Alzheimer’s, the agency said. The first floor will be dedicated to chapter services and programs, while the second floor will house administrative offices.

Move-in is scheduled for early 2014. The Houston chapter provides education and support services to 20,000 people annually across 37 counties. It is currently leasing space at 2242 W. Holcombe.

Plans for the space include the addition of a music room, a lounge area called the “memory café,” and an outdoor pavilion surrounded by a walking path, trees and a garden. The work will entail new floors, ceilings and wall finishes, as well as new reception areas, meeting rooms and a kitchen. Lighting for the building has been donated by Houston-based CW Lighting & Associates. T.R.W. Modernfold also donated wall partitions.

Board members and officials from the Houston and Southeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association held a ceremony Wednesday to mark the beginning of the project.
