The Houston and Southeast Texas chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a new headquarters, nearly tripling its available square footage.
The ceremony, at 6055 S. Loop East, will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 9. The organization plans to move into the 16,300-square-foot building by the first quarter. It currently occupies a 5,800-square-foot office.
Plus4 Credit Union previously occupied the building, which is being redesigned by San Francisco-based Gensler[1] .
The $3 million renovation project includes adding a music room, a lounge area called the “memory café,” reception areas, meeting rooms, a kitchen, an outdoor pavilion surrounded by a walking path, trees and a peaceful garden. Floors, ceilings and wall finishes will be updated.
Gensler is donating its services, and Houston-based firms CW Lighting & Associates and T.R. W. Modernfold[2] are also donating products.
“A highlight of the move is the availability to dedicate the entire first floor to chapter services and programs,” Richard Elbein[3] , CEO of the Houston chapter, said in a statement. “In the new home educational programs, support groups and early stage programs will be offered.”
The Houston and Southeast Texas chapter covers 37 counties and serves about 20,000 people a year.
Houston's aging population is affecting businesses, including changing the assisted-living landscape[4] and driving health care provider expansions[5] .
