SAGINAW, MI — The Alzheimer’s Association is hosting a Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Saginaw on Sept. 7.
The walk takes place at 10:15 a.m. at the Saginaw Township Soccer Complex, 3575 McCarty. Those wanting to participate in the walk may register at 9 a.m. at the soccer complex Sept. 7 or online at alz.org/walk[1] before the event.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s educates participants about Alzheimer’s disease while they raise money for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
Alzheimer’s disease is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death and affects one in nine individuals at 65 and one in three at 85, according to a news release from the Alzheimer’s Association.
This year marks the third year for the Saginaw Township Alzheimer’s event. There are 35 teams and 163 walkers registered for the walk.
“Our goal this year is $38,000. We have great hopes that we’ll reach our goal,” said Betty O’Neill, regional development coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association.
The money raised during the event will provide care and support services to the 24,000 residents of the central Michigan area living with Alzheimer’s and will contribute to research on the disease, the news release said.
There is an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s and a closing ceremony about 11:30 a.m.
The walk is a 3.5 mile pledge-based walk and takes about one hour, O’Neill said.
Another Walk to End Alzheimer’s event is scheduled for Sept. 21 at Emerson Park in Midland. Participants may register online beforehand at act.alz.org/midland[2] or at 9 a.m. the day of the event.
Event organizers are hoping to raise $74,500 during the Midland event, O’Neill said.
