BANGOR TOWNSHIP — Authorities say a 76-year-old Illinois woman with dementia who was visiting her son in southwestern Michigan got up in the middle of the night and drowned in a lake.
The Van Buren County sheriff’s department says it got a call about 3 a.m. Sunday to a home in Bangor Township, about 10 miles south-southeast of South Haven.
Sgt. Daniel Abbott says the woman’s son told deputies his mother had Alzheimer’s disease. He says she went to bed about 10 p.m. Sunday and was missing when he checked on her 4 hours later.
He says he found her in the water of Van Auken Lake.
The department didn’t immediately release the woman’s name and hometown. It says an investigation and an autopsy are planned.
