A former traveling health care worker was convicted this morning of an elaborate drug-stealing scheme that prosecutors say caused at least 45 patients in hospitals spanning Georgia, Kansas, and New Hampshire to be infected with his strain of hepatitis C.
David Kwiatkowski, 34, appeared in federal court in Concord, N.H., and pleaded guilty to tampering with a consumer product and obtaining controlled substances by fraud. He agreed to serve between 30 and 40 years in prison.
He will be sentenced Dec. 3. The judge has the discretion to increase or decrease his prison time at the sentencing hearing.
Kwiatkowski made no statement and no victims spoke at the hourlong hearing.
According to the plea agreement, one of patients infected by Kwiatkowski at Hays Medical Center in Kansas has since died and a coroner concluded that hepatitis C played a role in the death.
The plea agreement also identifies seven patients from Exeter Hospital, though not by name, who were allegedly infected by Kwiatkowski and have since suffered medical complications, as well as extreme mental distress for fear of infecting others.
