Vivian Cohagan will Walk to End Alzheimer's on Sept. 7 in Pueblo, and she's counting on other people to support her.

"It's personal," Cohagan said. "My father died of Alzheimer's and my husband's mother died of Alzheimer's."

Cohagan and her husband, Herb, head up a family team for the fundraising event that will begin and end at Pueblo Community College, 900 W. Orman Ave., in Pueblo. Check-in is at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9.

Others in Fremont County are also hosting teams for the event, Cohagan said, and organizers expect 29 teams with more than 100 people walking the three-mile course.

Cohagan has been involved with Walk to End Alzheimer's for about 10 years.

"I used to work at the Veteran's Nursing Home in Florence, and they had a team," she said. "After I retired, I thought I'd make our own team."

The Alzheimer's Association encourages any group to sponsor a team. Families, friends, co-workers, social and religious groups, and people of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. The Pueblo event is one of 10 across the state throughout the year that helps raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research.

"It's a worthy cause," Cohagan said. "You never know. Someday I could be there."

Cohagan said she hopes a cure will be found by the time her grandchildren are grown so they don't have to worry.

There is no registration fee for the Sept. 7 event. Participants are asked to gather pledges toward the cause and walkers raising $100 will receive a T-shirt.

Anyone interested in supporting the fundraiser may send contributions to the Alzheimer's Association Colorado Chapter at 4101 Outlook Blvd., Building B, Pueblo, CO 81008, or call Cohagan for event forms at 429-9913. Information also can be accessed at coloradoalzwalk.org[1] or call the Colorado chapter at (800) 272-3900.
