RUMFORD — The Rumford Community Home will host a legal and financial planning workshop for residents taking care of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia. It is set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 19.

Social Services director Sue Ellen Richardson said Bill Kirkpatrick, the program director for the Maine chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, will lead the workshop and teach people what legal and financial planning they should consider when dealing with Alzheimer's disease.

“I thought Bill would be the best choice to speak because of all the experience he has in this field,” Richardson said. Kirkpatrick has 30 years of experience in the mental health field, a certificate in bioethics and health policy, and is “very qualified” to speak on the matters at hand, she said.

Among the topics will be how to figure out which legal documents are necessary for families dealing with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, how to find proper legal and financial assistance, practical strategies for financing and how to make tax deductions when dealing with an individual with Alzheimer's disease.

Richardson said it's important for caregivers of Alzheimer's disease or dementia patients to attend the workshop, since they are often the ones who struggle.

“One of the things that happens in these situations is that the individual with Alzheimer's is getting all of their basic needs met, so their actual level of health is good,” Richardson said. “A lot of times, the caretaker, in working with people in that situation, end up with diminished health.”

The Rumford Community Home has one of the few secure Alzheimer's units in the state, according to Richardson, and currently houses 17 individuals who are suffering from Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia and need a secure unit.
