Jim Timmel’s "Born and unborn" (Forum, May 19) lacks an understanding of the complexity of the abortion issue. Whether pro-choice or anti-abortion, few would argue that the conviction of Dr. Hermit Gosnell for murdering newborn babies is not deserved.

However, the conviction is far from being an example that justifies an across-the-board law making all abortion illegal. There is a difference between aborting a potential baby and killing a baby.

No one "favors abortion." This terminology is inflammatory. Pro-choice does not imply that abortion is a "favorable" option.

Timmel’s opinion that women who make the choice to abort have made an "unwise choice" lacks perspective. There are cases of rape. There are cases in which the health of mother or fetus is threatened. There are cases that are no one’s business but the mother’s.

The difference between killing a newborn and a legal abortion lies in the difference between the capacity to sense the world. The ability to feel pain, which Timmel mentioned, is certainly a factor.
