MOUNT VERNON — The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s Kick Off event was held Wednesday at The Glenn A. Gallagher Center on the Ohio Eastern Star Campus. Prospective team captains and community members attended to learn more about the walk and to register their teams.
Shelly Grubb, team captain coordinator, said “We have been receiving services from the Alzheimer’s Association — now it’s our turn to help.”
Eighteen teams, or a total of 170 walkers, participated in last year’s walk and raised $34,000. “This year,” Grubb said, “we’d like to have 35 teams and raise $60,000. ... We want to raise money, absolutely, but we want to raise awareness even more.”
Local walk co-chairman Dr. Robert Atwell concurred. “A lot of people in this community [1,400] are touched by Alzheimer’s,” Atwell said. “This should help give them hope and support. I believe the caretakers (4,100) really need support and education. They need to know they are not alone.”
