MANILA - Former Senator Jovito Salonga has always been a fighter. He survived Philippines politics, including the Plaza Miranda bombing in 1971.
But now, his battle is against old age and Alzheimer's disease.
He has lost his ability to eat, think, communicate, and move.
However, his eldest son Steve said Salonga's heart remains strong. The former senator is turning 93 in June.
There is no known cure for Alzheimer's. But what's important is the love, care and understanding he gets from his family.
The old senator's spirit remains strong, Steve said.
He would rather think about his father's contributions for the country, and how people admired him and made him top the senatorial elections 3 times.
Despite his frail condition, people can still visit the former senator in their home.
The Salonga family are thankful that until now, God has continued to give him the gift of life.
