Community volunteer and veteran marathon participant Pamela Smith will be putting her feet to work Marathon Monday, April 15, raising funds to benefit the Alzheimer Respite Program “Intermissions,” at Duxbury Senior Center. But it’s no fun to run or walk 26 miles by yourself.

Intermissions is a supportive social day program offered by the Duxbury Senior Center. It is designed to promote and enhance the social, physical and cognitive skills for the participant who has been diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s disease or a related form of dementia. The program also provides respite for the participant’s family caregiver, who could use time for their own health and wellbeing. Currently the program is offered three days a week but there is a need to expand the offering to four days a week and have the ability to provide “scholarships” to members if needed. For more information or to schedule an intake interview, call 781-934-5774, ext. 107 or 105.

The marathon is open to runners and walkers, who singly or in teams will participate April 15 in walking or running 26.2 miles around Duxbury, starting and finishing at the Duxbury Senior Center. The finish line will celebrate with a big carbo-loading pizza party from 2 to 3 p.m. to celebrate this accomplishment. Participants are expected to calculate their time to accomplish the course and finish at the DSC between 2 and 3 p.m. If they need five hours to complete the course, they should start at 9 a.m.; if they need six hours to complete the course, they should start at 8 a.m., etc. High school runners and Saturday and Sunday runners are welcome to join in. There is no required fundraising amount, you set your own goal.

Call Pam Smith for additional information at 781-934-6492. Get your running shoes out of the closet and help raise funds and awareness about the Duxbury Alzheimer Respite Program.
