Zachary Regenstein, a junior at Weston High School, was among the honorees at the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease in New York City on Sunday, Oct. 20.
Bill Ritter of WABC-TV in New York was the master of ceremonies, and he outlined Zach’s tireless efforts to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s.
“Zach has been a tireless advocate and supporter of our cause ever since his beloved grandmother, Sandy Ryzoff, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 72, when Zach was only 7 years old. Zach and his grandmother had a connection to one another, for the short time they had, that he shall never forget,” Mr. Ritter said.
“Following his grandmother’s death in April 2012, Zach worked closely with his school’s administrators and with local businesses to make Alzheimer’s awareness a central cause among Weston High School students and their parents,” Mr. Ritter said.
“He incorporated the Alzheimer’s Association message into his school’s athletic events and back-to-school night, and held raffles and fund-raising events specifically targeted towards his fellow students.
“Zach and his family and friends on Team Sandy Ryzoff walk today in her honor, and in the never-ending hope of a world without Alzheimer’s,” Mr. Ritter concluded.
Zach and his family raised more than $17,000 for this year’s event.
Zach thanked the local businesses that contributed to the cause, including Lulu Lemon, David’s Tea, Pinkberry, Westport Pizza, Vineyard Vines, Peter’s Market, and the Fitness Edge. He also thanked the school administration, student council and Principal Lisa Deorio.
“My hope is that a cure will be found for Alzheimer’s in the not-too-distant future. I don’t want to see any other family go through this devastating loss of a loved one to this horrific disease,” Zach said.
