To find a cure for what ails her, Malina Woodbury is taking matters into her own hands.

The 9-year-old, from New Lebanon, N.Y., has tirelessly raised research funds for Neurofibromatosis Type 1, a genetic disorder that has left one of her legs severely bent. And if she has her way, the disorder will soon be a thing of the past.

"I just wanted to find a cure so other kids don't have to suffer with it[1] ," Malina told News 10. "When I get older, if they find a cure, hopefully my kids won't have to suffer with it either."

According to Johns Hopkins, symptoms of NF1 can include[2] tumors and glaucoma, in addition to bone malformations.

Malina's charity brainstorming has led to participating in annual walkathons, a 5K through Epcot Center, and hosting tea parties, her mom, Alicia, told The Huffington Post. The girl has received thousands in donations.

Her latest venture is creating earrings[3] , which she sells for about $5. Half of the proceeds go to the Children's Tumor Foundation, and she spends much of the rest on supplies and to help a family friend with cancer.

She's raised $1,800 since starting her earring venture in July.

"She is an amazing 9-year-old with a heart of gold!" her mother said.
