Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Many times, those suffering from Alzheimer's disease rely upon a family member or loved one as a caregiver. Caregivers now have a place to go to get support for themselves.

The Alzheimer's Association's Central New York chapter opens up a support group meeting at the Good Shepard Fairview home in Binghamton.

"I have participated in group atmosphere before and it's very helpful," said Nancy Salmieri of Endicott, "To understand other people's experiences so you can either help them or they could help you, I think it's a wonderful idea."

Salmieri's 88-year old mother has been suffering from dementia for the past year, and she's hoping this group will not only help her mother, but herself.

"Some of the things they say at the time can be very hurtful," Salmieri said, "But yet you've got to stop and realize that that is not the way the really feel, that is the dementia or Alzheimer's coming through, because there's times it's wonderful, but there's times it's not so good either."

The Alzheimer's Association has six support groups that meet in the Southern Tier.

The group at Good Shepard Fairview Home will meet once a month on the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30 am at 80 Fairview Avenue, Binghamton.
