Walkers hit the streets Saturday in Washington to help fund Alzheimer's research, some of which is being done at ECU.
The Harriet and John Wooten Laboratory for Alzheimer's and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research at ECU recently received a $50,000 grant to study the effects of physical and cognitive exercise on laboratory animals with symptoms of dementia and how certain drugs can mimic the effects.
The grant was from the Alzheimers North Carolina Program, which Saturday's walk in Washington supports.
The walk also helps AlzNC provide programs and services to individuals with dementia and their families, health care professionals and the general public, while raising awareness.
Saturday's two mile walk in Washington started at 10:30 at the Redmen's Lodge, 503 East 3rd Street.
WITN's Dave Jordan served as emcee.
There was also be an education fair and silent auction.
To make a donation, you can write a check to "Alzheimer's Walk," and mail it to Donna Woolard, 100 Blue Bird Land, Washington, NC 27889. You can also go online to alznc.org and make a donation to the "Washington/Beaufort County Alzheimer's Walk."
