Walkers participating in the "WALK to End Alzheimer's" on Saturday at the downtown Fort Morgan City Park have a personal story to share as to why they WALK.

At each and every WALK, the experiences shared about Alzheimer's are personal stories committed to creating a different future — one without Alzheimer's disease. Those stories include: "I'm walking to honor my mother, who has Alzheimer's disease"; "My uncle died from Alzheimer's, I do hope one day that the research of Alzheimer's will be as important as cancer"; "My dearest friend is a victim of the disease, I have lost her to this mind-stealing disease." There are many personal stories. Walkers are driven to participate because they all want the research to continue and find an end to this disease. All of these WALK participants have inspired their family and friends to join them in support of the Alzheimer's Association, to take steps to create a world without Alzheimer's disease.

Walkers are soliciting donations to help continue the research. Those raising $100 will receive a T-shirt. Shirts will be received on Bank Night on Thursday, 5 to 7 p.m., at the First Christian Church. Registration will also be held for those who have not registered online.

For the first $5 donation, the walker will also receive a Promise Garden Flower. The program is to help fulfill the promise to remember, to honor, to care and to fight Alzheimer's disease. The four flowers are of different colors: Blue represents those who have the disease; purple in honor of someone who has died of the disease; yellow for those supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer's; orange for those who support the cause.

The WALK activities begin Saturday at 8 a.m. with breakfast, registration and entertainment in the park. The WALK leaves the park at 9 a.m. The WALK is a brief walk going from the park to Bijou, continuing east to Grant, south to Kiowa, west to Main, then returning to the park.

When all the walkers return to the park, an award ceremony will be held. There will be awards for the three individuals and teams who raise the most funds. Also an award is given to the care center raising the most funds. All walkers are eligible for door prizes to add to the morning of fun. The few hours on Saturday morning given by the walkers will demonstrate, "this WALK is personal!" Make your plans to get personally involved as you take steps to end Alzheimer's.

All funds raised at this Tri-County Walk, Morgan, Washington, and Yuma counties, will provide local service in the area including education classes, support groups, and safety programs. Education classes can help with information about memory loss and dementia. A support group offers the opportunity for family members of those with Alzheimer's disease to spend times with others who are caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease. This can provide insight and often present a source of practical help and advice. Safety programs present information to ensure safety at all times as Alzheimer's causes a number of changes in the brain and body that may affect safety. Taking measures to ensure safety at all times can help prevent injuries, and it can help people with dementia feel relaxed and less overwhelmed. Information on programs can be found at alz.org/co[1] or call Marcia at 970-392-9202 in Greeley.
