The Lynn Community Health Center’s Baby Café recently hosted a visit from a top official of the US Department of Agriculture. Janey Thornton, deputy undersecretary for food, nutrition, and consumer services, stopped by the center as part of a Boston-area tour during National Breast-feeding Awareness Month. Located on the lower level of the health center’s building at 269 Union St., the Baby Café is a free drop-in center offering breast-feeding support and assistance from professionals and other mothers. Participants need not be patients at the health center. Jointly staffed by members of the center’s Women’s Health and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program, the café is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. During her visit, Thornton spoke with a dozen mothers enrolled in the program. “Breast milk provides many benefits for children, but breast-feeding can be difficult for some mothers. That is why we are so happy to see programs such as The Baby Café offering support to moms who are committed to breast-feeding their babies,” Thornton said in a prepared statement.
