Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, and it's estimated that more than 10,000 people in Kern County have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
To keep minds active, the Alzheimer's Disease Association of Kern County is hosting several events for local seniors age 60 and over.
The 7th annual Kern County Senior Games will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at Rosewood Senior Living Community. There will be a rock wall, a 1-mile walk, softball toss, Wii bowling, horseshoe toss and much more, ADAKC board member Sandy Morris said Tuesday on "First Look with Scott Cox."
"We need people to bring their seniors," Morris said. "We are looking at having more than 2,000 seniors this year."
ADAKC is also hosting The Heart Never Forgets benefit Oct. 24, with keynote speaker Michael Reagan.
Reagan will share the Alzheimer's journey he took with his father, President Ronald Reagan.
Simulcast host Scott Cox said he had the chance to talk with Michael Reagan and described him as an exceptional person and keynote speaker.
"People like him, the stuff they tell you will stick with you for the rest of your life, just a phenomenal person," Cox said.
VIP seats are still available at Reagan's table. Robin McGarrah with ADAKC said she is waiting for people to purchase seats. A seat will cost about $250, McGarrah said.
McGarrah also said ADAKC plans to move to a new location in the Seven Oaks Business Park in southwest Bakersfield.
"We are known as the small diamond in the rough but we are moving to a new scale, assisting more people," McGarrah said.
