Find yourself waking up at night because your spouse is tossing and turning? You might want to consider separate beds.

According to new research[1] from Toronto's Ryerson University, 30 to 40 percent of couples sleep apart at night.

Colleen Carney, director of Ryerson's Sleep and Depression Laboratory, told the CBC, “People will say they sleep better [together], but when we actually monitor their brains we see that their brain is not getting into deeper stages of sleep because they’re continuously being woken up by movement or sound."

Earlier research[2] has confirmed that sleeping in a bed with a partner can be bad for your health. One British study found that couples suffer up to 50 percent more disturbances[3] when sleeping next to someone than sleeping alone.

But don't feel the need to rush out and get separate beds if you're content dozing next to your spouse. As sleep specialist Dr. Neil Stanley said[4] in 2009, "It's about what makes you happy. If you've been sleeping together and you both sleep perfectly well, then don't change, but don't be afraid to do something different."

<blockquote>"Yes, we were sleeping in separate bedrooms by then, but not for the reasons you're thinking. When Redmond was a toddler he'd come into our bedroom at night wanting to sleep between us. Redmond has strong legs like his mother, and he would burrow into the bed, decide he didn't have enough room, and then start pushing with all his might, until I had no other choice but to sleep on the floor or in the other room. Eventually he outgrew this, but by then, Farrah and I had grown used to our privacy and it stuck, and even when we traveled after that, we'd often get adjoining rooms. I always thought of our arrangement as terribly mature of us. Now I wish I could have back every one of those nights we slept in separate beds."</blockquote>
