American Mardy Fish experienced another setback in his attempt to return to competitive tennis from a heart ailment, announcing Wednesday that he is withdrawing from the U.S. Open.

Fish, a former top 10 player in the world, will now have missed all four of the major championships in 2013. He's appeared in just eight matches this year, with a record of 3-5.
Last year, Fish reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, but withdrew prior to facing Roger Federer. At the time, Fish said the decision was influenced by a doctor, who advised it as a "precautionary measure."
In March of 2012, Fish was treated after a loss for an accelerated heartbeat. He was examined by doctors but eventually returned to the court.
Earlier this year, he spoke of both the mental and physical toll his health has taken on his game.
"I struggled mightily during the U.S. Open last year. So those sort of post-traumatic experiences that I've had -- that I have now -- are what I need to get over right now," Fish said, according to the Associated Press. "But it's a process. It's not an easy game. And fitness is as big a part of it as playing, and sometimes that's trouble -- spells trouble -- for me."
Fish, who was at one time ranked as high as No. 7 in the world, is currently the 173th best player.
