The Alzheimer's Association Colorado Chapter recently recognized Gertrude (Gertie) Chapin for her outstanding volunteering for the Walk to End Alzheimer's in 2012.

She has given of her time and energy each year to organize the Walk to End Alzheimer's in Morgan county. Her tireless efforts helped raise more than $38,000 in 2012.

Chapin was recognized at the Alzheimer's Association State Volunteer Event in June and again on July 8 in Ft Morgan.

Even as she volunteers for the Alzheimer's Association, Gertie continues to work and support her family's dairy farm in Weldona.

She will continue to raise funds toward finding a cure for Alzheimer's and is leading the committee again for a successful walk in 2013.

This year the Walk to End Alzheimer's in Fort Morgan will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at City Park.

Unlike many non-profit fundraising walks, this one doesn't require a registration fee in exchange for a T-shirt.

This is a pledge event at which every person who walks is asked to make a personal contribution and ask family, friends and co-workers to support them with a donation to the Alzheimer's Association.

Once participants reach $100 in pledges they receive a shirt. Other incentive prizes are offered as fund raising levels increase.

"The walk offers a unique opportunity to feel a sense of community and support on the long road of Alzheimer's disease," said Marcia Schafer, regional director for the Alzheimer's Association Colorado Chapter Northeast office. "Community volunteers make this event happen each year and help us provide services and programs at no cost to families who so desperately need our help."
