PHOENIX - The Arizona Legislature's ongoing debate about whether to expand Medicaid coverage to 300,000 more poor Arizonans is set to collide head-on with the debate over abortion.

The House Appropriations Committee is taking up a Senate-passed budget bill that includes Gov. Jan Brewer's Medicaid proposal Monday morning. Republican chairman Rep. John Kavanagh opposes Brewer's plan and has said he does not expect it to get out of his committee. That would leave it up to supporters in the full House to tack it back onto the bill later in the week.

The same committee is also set to consider a bill that bans public dollars from indirectly supporting abortion providers and to allow snap inspections of abortion clinics.

Democrats say if that bill passes they may not support Medicaid expansion.
