Networks and newspapers recently, reluctantly, covered the story of the horrors of Kermit Gosnell’s abortion business in Philadelphia, where witnesses testified babies were born, breathed and cried before succumbing to scissors the staff would use to cut their spinal cords and kill them.
Gosnell now is serving life in prison for murder, and evidence of additional horrors are starting to surface about similar scenarios across America’s abortion industry.
Those memory-searing graphic images even have made their way into the halls of Congress, wherein rests the power to address abortion’s violence in a meaningful way.
It was, according to Operation Rescue, the courage of U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., that provided the truth to members of the House Judiciary Committee.
Franks cited the developing case involving the Houston, Texas, abortion business run by Douglas Karpen.
WND reported recently that authorities in Texas are calling for a formal investigation of Karpen following the release of a video made by three former employees who had said he was in the practice of killing babies born alive by twisting off their heads or shoving a surgical instrument into their brains.
“In a week when serial murderer Kermit Gosnell was found guilty of killing babies, I read with disgust about the allegations [against] Houston-based abortionist Douglas Karpen,” said Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in a statement.
“The Harris County authorities should perform a full-scale investigation and take action against those who broke state law,” Dewhurst said.
The outrage followed the release by the Texas-based Life Dynamics of a video with accusations from three women who worked for Karpen.
The women explain that the abortionist sometimes would twist the baby’s head off his neck, shove a surgical instrument into the vulnerable baby’s brain through the skull, or shove a surgical instrument into the chest or abdomen.
The interview featuring Deborah Edge, Krystal Rodriguez and Gigi Aguilar provided proof, Life Dynamics said, “the lofty rhetoric of ‘choice’ may insulate those who work in the political and public relations arena, but the day-to-day reality for those who provide those ‘choices’ is to deal with the corpses and parts of corpses they pull out of their customers’ bodies.”
Mark Crutcher, the founder of Life Dynamics, said, “While the pro-life movement claims that abortion takes the life of a living human being, nobody on Earth knows that better than the people who work at abortion clinics.”
Edge said, “I thought, well, it’s an abortion you know, that’s what he does, but I wasn’t aware that it was illegal. … Most of the time we would see him where the fetus would come completely out and of course, the fetus would still be alive.
“He does a lot of huge abortions. A lot of the times, we would bring the big fetus[es] that were over age, we would re-open the bag and just look at it and be like, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s so big!’”

Franks explained why the committee was discussing the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
“Whatever else happens during a late term abortion … a child dies. The mother is never the same,” he said. “Whatever gifts that child might have brought to humanity are lost.”
The graphic images were provided by the former Karpen employees and were shown in support of the legislation that would give nationwide protection for unborn children after 20 weeks – when they are known to feel pain.
The bill originally addressed the District of Columbia, but was expanded when Gosnell’s “House of horrors” was revealed to have babies’ feet in jars and human remains in a freezer.
Testimony on behalf of the bill came from several witnesses brought by Franks, including former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levantino.
He described in graphic detail the process used, while he still was an abortionist, of removing a baby from a mother.
“You will know you have it right when you crush down on the clamp and see white gelatinous material coming through the cervix. That was the baby’s brains.”
But he said since he fled the abortion industry, he was worked on many cases where a mother’s life was seriously threatened by a pregnancy.
He cited one case where a woman suffered from severe pre-eclampsia or toxemia, and could have died if left untreated.
“This case was managed successfully by rapidly stabilizing the patient’s blood pressure and ‘terminating’ her pregnancy by Cesarean section. She and her baby did well. This is a typical case in the world of high-risk obstetrics … During my time at Albancy Medical Center I managed hundreds of such cases by ‘terminating’ pregnancies to save mother’s lives. In all those hundreds of cases, the number of unborn children that I had to deliberately kill was zero.”
Also testifying was nurse and pro-life blogger Jill Stanek, who as a nurse in Chicago held an abortion baby that was born alive and left to die.
Dr. Maureen Condic, of the University of Utah’s Department of Neurobiology, also testified babies can feel pain as early as 8-10 weeks.
“We really appreciate the work of Rep. Franks and the testimony of Mrs. Stanek, who highlighted our documentation of abortion horrors, as well as the powerful testimony of the others who spoke. We constantly endeavor to get information like this into the hands of the public, and we are grateful for their help in doing so,” said Cheryl Sullenger, senior policy adviser for Operation Rescue.
“It is hard to believe that anyone seeing those photos would not have second thoughts about abortion practices in this nation.”
Florida question
WND reported recently when a related issue arose in Florida:
A lobbyist for Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion business in the United States, said a doctor and a mother should be allowed to decide to kill a newborn who survives an abortion.
The Planned Parenthood comments came at a recent Florida legislative hearing from Alisa LaPoit Snow, who was opposing a proposal that would require a doctor to provide care to an infant whom an abortion failed to kill.
Lawmakers were stunned, asking the same question over and over.
“So, it is just really hard for me to even ask you this question because I’m almost in disbelief,” said Rep. Jim Boyd. “If a baby is born on a table as a result of a botched abortion, what would Planned Parenthood want to have happen to that child that is struggling for life?”
Snow’s response?
“We believe that any decision that’s made should be left up to the woman, her family, and the physician.”
In the Florida hearing, the same, or very similar, questions followed several times, as if the lawmakers could not believe the position advocated by Snow.
“You stated that a baby born alive on a table as a result of a botched abortion, that that decision should be left to the doctor and the family. Is that what you’re saying?” asked Rep. Jose Oliva.
Snow didn’t change her response.
“That decision should be between the patient and the health care provider,” she said.
When one lawmaker suggested at that point the “patient” also would include the newborn, Snow responded: “That’s a very good question. … I would be glad to have some more conversations with you about this.”
