Experts: Use optimism, cheer to manage Alzheimer's

Little white lies OK in some situations





Never let them be wrong. Always ask yes or no questions. Master the art of distraction.

Those are just a few pieces of advice Donna Sasani offers to family members who have a loved one with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. A licensed practical nurse, Sasani is care director at the Harbor, a unit within the Village at East Farms assisted-living facility in Waterbury for those with memory impairments.


With 23 years of experience as a geriatric nurse, Sasani has seen the devastation of a fleeting memory and the loss of dignity that comes with it. Her father died of Alzheimer's at age 72. Those working with the afflicted, like Sasani, realize how draining and heartbreaking it can be for patients and caregivers alike. In the early stages, dementia can be difficult to diagnose. In later stages, it can be impossible to manage.
