A 56-year-old resident died after jumping or falling through a window at a state-run mental health facility in the South End Wednesday night, authorities said.
The man was killed after he went out the eighth-floor window of the Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Facility, said David Procopio, a State Police spokesman. The victim landed on the roof of a three-story structure attached to the building, near an outdoor recreational area for patients, he said.
State Police called the death a non-homicide Wednesday night, according to Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
Procopio said the incident began when State Police received a call at 8:29 p.m. alerting them to a person about to jump from the mental health center on East Newton Street.
The Boston Fire Department, Boston Emergency Medical Services, and State and local police arrived at the scene to find the victim dead on the lower roof, Procopio said.
The victim was a resident at the facility, according to Wark. No additional information on the man was immediately available Wednesday night.
The Department of Health and Human Services campus police declined to comment on the incident, and no other officials at the mental health facility could be reached for comment.
A spokeswoman for Health and Human Services, which oversees mental health services in the state, could also not immediately be reached for comment.
