The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Missouri Chapter announced Thursday that families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease are eligible for a $500 respite grant.
Funds may be used to hire a substitute in-home care provider to allow the family caregiver personal time away for himself or herself, according to a release from the association.
Funds may also be used to pay for dementia-specific medications and safety products.
Earlier this year, the Missouri legislature appropriated funds to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for the Alzheimer’s Service Project, according to the release.
Following a competitive grant process, DHSS awarded the contract for the caregiver respite reimbursement program to the three Alzheimer’s Association chapters located in Missouri.
Each chapter will administer the grants within their chapter territories, the release said.
The Greater Missouri Chapter serves 58 counties in northeast, central and southwest Missouri with offices in Springfield and Columbia.
The grants are available through April 2014. Families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia are encouraged to call the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Missouri Chapter at 417-886-2199 or 800-272-3900 for more information.
