MASON CITY | Their father's recent death from Alzheimer's disease has inspired members of the Chuck McManigal family to lead the way at the annual Walk to End Alzheimer's at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in East Park.

"We hope that our kids will never have to live in a world that has Alzheimer's," said John McManigal, 50, of Mason City, a son of Chuck McManigal.

McManigal, a prominent Mason City attorney, died of Alzheimer's disease in May at the age of 74.

John will be joined by his wife, Caroline; stepmother, Nancy McManigal, of Ventura Heights; his brother Mark and sister Mary, both of California; their children, grandchildren and cousins at the walk to raise funds for Alzheimer's research.

"Alzheimer's robs people of their personal identity," John McManigal said. "It'll be a good time to heal with my family and will make us feel positive about doing something to help find a cure."

Registration for the walk is at 9 a.m. Coffee, water and fruit will be available.

The goal is to raise $15,000.

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that is not a normal part of the aging process, said Mason City attorney Theresa Staudt, friend of Mark McManigal who also practiced law with Chuck McManigal.

"There is no cure," she said.

Staudt wants others to be aware of the early symptoms of Alzheimer's, such as memory loss that disrupts daily life, confusion and changes in mood and personality.

"Chuck was this sharp, witty, larger than life presence," she said. "He was a huge influence on my life. I saw the horrible side effects of his disease. It's a pretty devastating illness."
