Eye color, dimples and freckles[1] are physical traits we inherit from our parents that are obvious to the naked eye. But when was the last time you looked at someone's face and noticed a widow's peak[2] ? Our guess would be probably never.

A widow's peak is a dominant physical trait where the hairline dips into a V-shape[3] near the center of the forehead. The expression comes from the belief that it was a sign of early widowhood[4] , though the trait has also been considered a mark of beauty. (We prefer the more positive outlook.)

The widow's peak is often more prominent on males. You could hardly miss it on actors John Travolta[5] and Leonardo DiCaprio[6] , rocker Gavin Rossdale[7] and U.S. Representative Paul Ryan[8] . However, side parts, swooped bangs and other styling tricks make it stand out less on the ladies.

Check out our roundup of female celebrities who we only recently noticed have widow's peaks[9] . Did we miss anyone?
